ISU still undefeated on ice

The ISU hockey team returned home from its first road trip last weekend with its undefeated status still intact.

The Cyclones are 3-0-3 in ACHA regular season play this season after Friday night’s tie with Michigan-Dearborn and Saturday’s victory over Eastern Michigan.

“Anytime you can go on the road and earn a win and a tie, you have to feel good,” ISU Head Hockey Coach Al Murdoch said.

The Cyclones had to battle back in both contests after falling behind early in each game.

ISU trailed 3-0 against Michigan-Dearborn Friday night when Cyclone DeHang Sun netted his second goal of the season at 6:56 of the second period.

Wade Eldridge assisted Sun on the goal.

M-D would score two minutes later to restore their three goal advantage. ISU senior Sean Weaver closed out second period scoring when he connected on a feed from ISU scoring leader Darcy Anderson. Darren Anderson tallied a second assist on the goal.

The third period began with the Cyclones trailing 4-2. ISU would shut down M-D’s offense in the final period and once again come back in dramatic fashion.

ISU captain Brian Wierson brought the Cyclones to within one at 6:23 of the period with the assist going to fellow captain Rusty Crawford.

Darcy Anderson would get the game tying goal at 8:56. The goal was Anderson’s fifth of the year.

Although the tie kept ISU undefeated in regular season play, Cyclone captain Doug Borud expressed disappointment in the game’s outcome.

“We shouldn’t have tied the game,” Borud said, “We should have won it.”

“We came out lazy and then had to pick it up late,” Darcy Anderson said.

“We were in total control in overtime, hitting posts and controlling the tempo. We should have won it.”

On Saturday, ISU fell behind early once again, trailing Eastern Michigan 3-0 after one period of play. Then the Cyclone offense came alive.

ISU’s Darren Anderson scored the Cyclone’s first goal at 7:47 of the second en route to his second hat-trick in the last two weekends with the assist going to John Paolello.

At 11:58 Anderson struck again, this time assisted by Wierson.

ISU defenseman Greg Jones evened the score at three on an unassisted tally three minutes later.

The game went back and forth with ISU goals coming from Wierson and Aaron Scharf before the Cyclones would put the game away for good.

With the score tied at five a piece, Cyclone Darcy Anderson scored unassisted to give ISU the lead. Less than a minute later, Borud would score what would prove to be the game winner on a feed from Weaver.

ISU would add insurance scores from Darcy and Darren Anderson. Darren’s goal completed the hat-trick and would move him into second place in scoring for the Cyclones.

Darren has scored three goals in his last three games.

“He’s been playing exceptionally well,” Murdoch said. “He’s been very consistent in his scoring so far.”

“Coach has been mixing and matching lines trying to see what works best,” Darren said. “The line I played on last weekend (with Weaver and Borud) clicked really well.”

Although most players were not happy about Friday’s tie, there were positives drawn from both games.
