Burning up the scoreboard
September 5, 1996
Mr. Brcka, meet Mr. Elmore. Mr. Elmore, this is Mr. Knighten.
Coach Dan McCarney will introduce his revamped defense tomorrow night when his Cyclones take on Wyoming under the lights starting at 6:00.
After tomorrow night, Iowa State football fans will become familiar with the names on the starting defensive line-up, but for now fans will be stuck asking questions such as: who is this James Elmore, how does Dave Brcka pronounce his last name, is Bill Marsau as good as his high school reputation?
Revamped defense? McCarney did not just replace the fuel filter on this defensive unit. No sir, he went under the hood, ripped out the engine and put a new one in.
I do not have the data in front of me to do any research, but I would be willing to bet that Iowa State is the only defense in Division I football that starts more freshman (3) than seniors (1).
And who does Iowa State play in its first game with all these young pups?
Wyoming, with legitimate Heisman candidate receiver Marcus Harris. Yes, that Wyoming. The football team that scores 50 points about as frequently as their basketball team.
Get ready for a WACky football game tomorrow. The Cowboys will bring their Western Athletic Conference-style aerial attack on a mostly untested defense.
How much respect does McCarney have for Harris’ skills?
“I think Marcus Harris is a fine a receiver as I’ve seen, coached against, played against in the 25 years I’ve been in college football,” McCarney said. “He is an outstanding wide receiver. He is as fine a receiver you will see in this stadium or in college football this year.”
What does McCarney realistically think about his young defense’s chances of controlling the Wyoming offense?
“We are not going to stop Wyoming’s passing attack, we’ve got to try and slow them down,” he said.
“We are going to try come up with some timely plays, hopefully some turnovers, but we are not going to stop them.”
So what does all this mean?
I’ll tell you what I think it means. I think with Iowa State’s offense that returns virtually intact, with a 2,000-yard plus rusher and with maybe a much-improved passing attack, both teams are going to be able to score a lot of points.
I look for more points to be scored by both teams than your average NBA game.
This game has many similarities with the Brigham Young-Texas A & M game earlier in the season.
You remember that game. That was the game the Brigham Young WAC-style passing attack lit up A & M’s “Wrecking Ball Defense” for 41 points, including a last-minute bomb that beat the Aggies, 41-37.
True, A & M’s defensive backs showed about as good of coverage skills as my great-grandmother, but the point is that BYU showed the nation what a relentless passing attack can do to an untested defensive backfield.
My big prediction for tomorrow’s game between Iowa State and Wyoming — 112-94.
I do not know who is going to win the game, but the winner will score 112 points and loser will score 94.
