McCarney ready for Wyoming
September 3, 1996
Addressing a packed crowd in the locker room of the nearly complete Jacobson Building, Football Head Coach Dan McCarney delivered an energetic speech on the upcoming September 7 game versus Wyoming.
“We have the finest facilities yet,” McCarney said. “And I am anxious to play a game, to see how much improvement we have made.”
“It’s really hard to see how much we have done until we are faced with a challenge,” McCarney said. “We have an extremely young football team overall – 24 new kids. We have nine new starters – three in the offense, and six in defense.”
“I’m really proud of the commitment and sacrifices the players have shown,” McCarney said. “I’m really happy on how things have gone.”
McCarney said the team is in excellent shape for the game from an injury standpoint, but there are some players entering the season with injuries, some of those serious.
Rodney Guggenheim suffered a career ending injury to his knee and will have surgery in a few weeks.
“Tim Sanders won’t be able to play. He broke his jaw in practice against Darren Davis in practice,” McCarney said. “We’ll miss Sanders.”
“I think that we are in very good shape overall,” McCarney said. “I am very proud to showcase to the country our team… We must be the first 3-8 team to go on national television.”
“Ticket sales have been excellent so far,” McCarney said, adding that this game will be broadcast nationwide.”Our players are hoping we can come to a packed house”
“I feel better because we are more proficient,” McCarney said. “We are throwing the ball better than when I took the job. Darren Davis has shown to be an excellent player. He is quick, tough, and durable,” said McCarney. “Troy hasn’t missed a beat, either. He is faster and stronger than last year.”
McCarney said people will get to see the brothers on the field together for some plays.
“Based on practice situations, we have improved since last year,” McCarney said.
