Brief history of Trice field
September 24, 1996
In Mondays article, “Jack who? ISU football great remembered ,” Daily staff writer Karen Cho erroneously stated that the movement to name the new football stadium came merely a decade ago.
I suggest your reporter check the Daily archives.
I believe it was 1979 when President Parks blocked an effort to name the stadium after Trice.
At that time older white alumni were furious that the stadium would be named after a black man and threatened to withdraw donations to the university if the change took place.
As a compromise, Parks brought about the idea of “Jack Trice Field at Cyclone Stadium.”
If Cho is going to pursue a career in journalism, I suggest she concern herself a little more with the facts.
