The sooner, the better
September 17, 1996
It’s coming. A flood of applicants couldn’t stop it. It’s coming.
No last-minute pleas will get in its way. It’s coming.
The place hasn’t got a friend in the world. It’s coming.
There will be no protests, no rallies. It’s coming.
And it’s coming sooner than expected. Stand back folks; make way for the Pammel Court wrecking ball.
You can almost see the monster-sized fishing sinker making its way down Stange Road. It’s wobbling now, but oh boy, will it be ready to go come . . . . . the turn of the century?
Wait. That was the old plan. University officials now say it’s entirely possible the biggest eyesore on campus will be leveled before the planned year 2000.
There are, after all, just 50 remaining apartment complexes.
And good riddance.
Once — way, way, way back when — a primary housing complex for married students, Pammel Court is now possibly the most aesthetically displeasing bunch of thin-walled sheds with tin roofs around.
It’s almost more inviting to live in the University of Iowa dorms — complete with that strange notion of Hawkeye mania — than to be forced to dwell in Pammel Court.
University higher-ups say plans for the phase-out and construction of two brand-spanking-new buildings are moving rapidly.
We say: Go faster, or at least keep up the pace. The Court has been the hated step-child of the university for years.
Remember hearing about Pammel Court on your freshman tour of campus? How about getting a tour through the desert-barracks-type setting? No?
There’s probably a reason for that.
Kudos for pushing the demolition. The sooner the better.
