Avoid the ‘space race’
September 4, 1996
The editorial, “Gender Equity Still A Farce” claims that there is a long way to go in equal pay amongst men and women at Iowa State.
The focus is on the top level of the pay scale up in the 100,000 plus range.
Perhaps those very high salaries for administrators is the crux of a larger problem from which gender inequity is derived.
Few state employees ever make it up into that big money stratosphere.
Your editorial finds there is a lot of room at the top for women to move in.
State institutions have claimed for many years that they are competing for top level executives with private industry.
Almost all administrators come and go from colleges and not private
industry.
Universities should cap the salary increases for administrators.
This will bring equity about also and without a “Space Race” competitive atmosphere.
