Sundays have a new tradition for Ames residents—a little java and a little jazz.
This Sunday, Ken Jolls and friends will be performing at Cafe Beaudelaire.
The quintet, made up of singer Morgan Halgren, bassist Cheri Hennager, drummer Pete Simonson, Jim Bovinette on trumpet and Jolls covering the vibes, features vocal and instrumental jazz, traditional Latin standard and bossa. Jolls is a jazz vibes player with many years of professional music experience.
He has played, arranged and conducted everything from concert to commercial theater.
Locally, he has played at Stephens Auditorium, the M-Shop and Wallaby’s to name a few.
Halgren is a local personality seen regularly on Iowa Public Television.
Her current show “Living In Iowa” airs twice weekly and is seen throughout the state.
For the past seven years, she and Jolls have been featured in the Des Moines “Jazz in July” concerts.
Hennager is a graduate of UNI and plays regularly with a variety of local jazz groups. Simonson is a “regular” in the Des Moines jazz scene and has played frequently with Susie Miget. Bovinette is in his second year on the music faculty here at Iowa State and conduct the ISU jazz ensemble. Cafe Beaudelaire is located at 2504 Lincoln Way. Showtime is 5:30 p.m.
