Race issues pop up at second GSB meeting

It was only the second meeting of the year, but racial topics were already an issue at Wednesday night’s Government of the Student Body meeting.

A video presentation entitled “Something for Everyone” was given to the GSB by Larry Cooney, director of Recreation Services at Iowa State, that Senator Yasmin Blackburn said lacked minority representation.

The presentation began with Cooney giving a summary to the GSB about Recreation Services.

“We again are ready to offer a full spectrum of services to students this year with some things new this year. All of our programs are open to all Iowa State students,” Cooney said.

Cooney then gave a video presentation that showed such activities as aerobics, intramural sports- like flag football and broomball, sports clubs like hockey, skydiving and rugby, and outdoor activities like canoeing, rappelling and backpacking.

Cooney then added that he wanted the GSB to make this video available to all students and that he hoped they all participated.

It was at this point that Blackburn spoke out.

“I notice that there are almost no black people in that video,” Blackburn said.

Cooney replied that there should be, and that they tried to “include everyone” in the video. He also said the recreation services are open to everyone.

The situation did not build from there, but Blackburn did have several points that she wanted to make.

“I was just making an observation from what I saw in the film. I shouldn’t have said ‘no black people’ because I did see like two, one walking and one playing basketball, but minorities weren’t properly represented in the film,” Blackburn said.
