The Iowa State men’s golf team fired a 54-hole total of 900 to place seventh at the Kansas Invitational held in Lawrence, Kan.
ISU carded rounds of 299-301-300, marking the first team title this season as the Cyclones shot an 18-hole score over 300.
“We played pretty well. We got out fast. I think we have the caliber of players to win if we step it up a notch,” Dale Anderson, ISU men’s head golf coach said. “Practices are going well and there is a lot of talent here. We’ll play better.”
Intrastate rival Drake claimed the team title with an 881 total, while Colorado State and Nebraska tied for second, six shots behind at 887.
“Drake is a legitimately good team, like a lot of the teams in Division I golf,” Anderson said.
Steve Friesen of Nebraska won the medalist race with a four-under card of 212. Robert Russell of Missouri-Kansas City and Drake’s Zach Johnson placed second with a 1-under 215 tally.
Iowa State was led by junior Eagle Grove native Jason Knutzon, who tied for 16th with rounds of 74-75-73 for a total of 222. Aaron Patton, a freshman from Bloomington, Ind., tied for 29th with a 226 total.
“Knutzon played very well. He was well up the ladder in the individual standings,” said Anderson. “Everyone scored rather close together. We just need to want it a little more.”
Schools finishing ahead of ISU were Colorado State and Nebraska, Southwestern Louisiana and Texas-Arlington.
Top scores for ISU behind Knutzon and Patton were Travis Korver (227), John Levy (229) and Donnie Teeter (231).
