Women’s rugby: well worth watching

Where is it possible to see thirty women running, wrestling, and tackling each other for one particular object? If the Salon Selectives free makeovers came to mind then someone’s horizons need to be expanded.

“Rugby is a combination between football and soccer,” said Tammy Kukien head coach of the ISU’s Women’s Rugby Team. The opportunity to observe main stream sports on campus is more abundant than plastic mugs on a Wednesday night. Rugby offers something as intense and fun as Cyclone football but it also allows spectators as well as players to experience something new.

ISU offers a men’s and a women’s rugby team. “If you are a first time spectator of Rugby you should come watch a women’s match,” Kukien said,”the men’s game is more about strength and speed; where as a women’s match focuses more on the technique and strategies so it is easy for a spectator to keep up.”

The team practices twice a week and often travels to play different teams. The team is made up of players from all different levels of skill. There are beginners and then there are people who have been playing along time. Women who play sports in high school who aren’t scholarship material sometimes miss playing and being part of a team. “People miss the team camaraderie, and a way to release unwanted stress and aggression.” Kukien said.

Right now the team has a good size roster for the fall season, but there will be a spring season and many spots to fill. “We are always looking for more people to come out and join. The team just wants to play hard and have a good time and get the spectators involved,” said Brenda Knapp, president and team member of the ISU Women’s Rugby Club.

They have a team, they have a coach, they even have somewhat decent equipment, but they are lacking one important thing that makes a sporting event a sporting event: spectators. At a women’s rugby match a spectator should expect to see an exciting, competitive game. It is fast and physical and different from any other mainstream sport. “Our spectators are as much a part of the game as the players are,” Kukien said.

So in the spirit of the never ending search for something new and exciting check out a women’s rugby match. Just remember, give a woman a flower and she will probably smile. Give a woman a ball and she will tear you a completely new ass and smile while doing it.
