Union board meets behind closed doors

For the past two weeks, Student Union Board executives and members have conducted closed sessions for nearly 30 minutes at their weekly Monday night meetings.

Tom Thielen, vice-president of student affairs, said that he does not know why the sessions would be closed. “My understanding is that SUB meetings are open unless they’re discussing personnel issues,” Thielen said.

Thielen also said he would address the question to SUB president Aaron Cooper at the Memorial Union board meeting on Wednesday.

“I assume they’re open, and there needs to be an explanation if they’re closed,” Thielen said of SUB meetings.

At Monday night’s meeting the SUB went into closed session in order to discuss the appeals of student groups concerning office space in the Union.

At the meeting, Cooper said the closed sessions were being held to allow the board “to get together and talk amongst ourselves.” Cooper said yesterday he would note the Daily’s objection to closed SUB meetings when private discussion is not essential.
