Davis runs after records

Finally, I can come close to using the words carnage and slaughter in my column. I was going to use these words of destruction in describing the Wyoming game, and the pen was flowing smoothly writing the epitaph on the Cowboy’s grave until they closed the gap in the fourth quarter and captured the win in overtime.

I honestly had the feeling it would happen again in Saturday’s game against Northern Iowa. Even though ISU had the lead throughout the game, there was the lingering feeling of the Cyclones’ first game. But ISU came out on top, 42-23.

Saturday’s game was the Cyclone’s first win of the season and hopefully it builds some momentum within the program.

The game was also the last scheduled time the Cyclones play against the Panthers, and what a way to go out.

UNI has been having a great year, and that had to have Coach Dan McCarney on edge. But I could hardly consider UNI a “tremendous challenge” as McCarney stated last week.

Nonetheless, ISU was in control throughout the game.

ISU’s strong offense dominated this game. Compare the total yards rushing – ISU’s 324 to their 119. UNI was able to pull more yards out by passing, 268 to 154.

I think everyone knows who was in charge on the field Saturday. Troy Davis. Davis had one of his best games yet, with five touchdowns in one game, tying the school record.

This was Davis’ second time to rack up 30 points in one game, the first time was against UNLV in 1995.

Also noteworthy of Davis was his 241 rushing yards, making the win over UNI his third highest in yards. The only times he posted more yards were when the Cyclones pummeled UNLV and Ohio last year.

Also, Davis had 53 of the 60 rushing attempts by ISU in the game, setting a new school record.

Davis doesn’t have far to go to put his name at the top of the record books. Dexter Green holds the record for career net rushing yards for ISU with 3,437.

Davis currently has 2,745 yards, and I predict that he will break the 18 year old record against Oklahoma State.

Davis currently holds the ISU record for most yards rushing in a game (302) and in a season (2010). Davis also has the most 200-yard rushing games in a season and career. For sure, Davis has been keeping the T.D. Yard-O-Meter guys busy.

Other fine accomplishments throughout the game were the 154 yards passing by Todd Doxzon, and six points after touchdowns for Jamie Kohl, who also posted the same performance last year against UNLV.

The Davis brothers indeed put on a show for their father and brother, who drove up from Miami to see the game.

Their father drove up to LeMars later Saturday to see another son, Eddie, play for Westmar College.

Unfortunately, the Westmar Eagles lost to Mayville State, 18-17.
