No news would be good news
August 28, 1996
Not too long ago, women were given a voice in marriage.
A while later, they were allowed to drive cars. Soon after that, they were allowed to vote.
Now they are being admitted into our formerly all-male military academies.
What’s next? A woman on the moon?
On Saturday, August 24, four women moved into the barracks at The Citadel, ready to begin what may be the next ground-breaking occasion for women’s rights. Press reports everywhere touted the event as being the news of the day.
What may seem as common sense in a society that claims to be rooted in awareness, an issue such as this still finds itself on the discussion table.
Not giving a woman an equal opportunity on the same playing field as a man should be considered ludicrous by modern standards.
It is hard to believe that at one time women were barred from voting. It is even harder to believe that we seem to have learned very little from that event.
Clifton Poole, an alumnus and interim president of The Citadel was quoted in Monday’s Daily as saying, ” … a majority of the people associated with The Citadel would have liked the school to remain single-gender. However, that is the past.”
Current sexist feelings cannot be considered “the past.”
What Poole should have said was, “A majority of the people associated with The Citadel would like the school to remain single gender. This is wrong, and it is a problem that should be addressed now.”
The media continues to report the admittance of women into The Citadel as news.
This topic should not be an issue. When will the day come that this will not be news?
