‘Fun Stations’ provide warm welcome

For many transfer students or freshmen, living in the Towers residence halls may seem like living in a entirely different world.

Fortunately, the full time staff at Towers Residence Life are doing their best to make the students who live in the Towers feel more comfortable with the location.

“Fun Stations” have been set up on the corner of Welch Avenue and Storm Street.

The intention of the stations is to give the best possible welcome to the Towers Residents, said Doug Gruenewald of Towers Residence Life.

He said the stations are also there to answer questions students may have, pass out Cy-Ride schedules and campus maps, help students get on Cy-Ride and let students pick up job applications.

“Fun Stations were started last year,” Gruenewald said. “This year other residences did it, too, but some used student government members. We used our full-time staff so they can become involved with the students.”

Gruenewald said he already considers the stations a new tradition.

If all goes well a second, smaller station may be opened near Wilson.

He said more than 1,000 students are expected to stop by the Welch and Storm locations.

Some of the job applications available are student security, maintenance, food service and custodial jobs.

Lisa Glaesemann, a freshman, found the Fun Station to be very helpful.

“It was nice of the staff to get students oriented with the campus. It was also nice to know it was staff who knew the Towers, not just people from campus,” Glaesemann said.

LeAnn Davis, one of the staff members working at the Fun Station, said, “The stations are great, we get to know the students on a one-on-one basis.”

Gruenewald said it is a great chance for the staff to get outside, and possibly answer questions students wouldn’t necessarily come to the office to ask.

The Fun Stations are open on Monday and Tuesday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
