Munn’s loses
July 10, 1996
Munn’s Building Center was finally handed its first loss of the Center Court League season on Tuesday night by Sigler Printing & Publishing by the score of 104-99.
Sigler was led by the dominant inside play of Kevin Sams, who poured in 41 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Fred Brown also recorded a double-double, by scoring 35 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Jacy Holloway was a force on the perimeter as he recorded nine assists and eight rebounds.
Munn’s was led by Dedric Willoughby, who despite 36 points, was not able to keep Munn’s winning streak intact. “The streak was going good. We wanted to keep it going,” Willoughby said.
With only six players, Munn’s cited fatigue as one reason for the loss. Brad Johnson, who added 19 points for Munn’s, said, “We didn’t have enough guys. I was so tired.”
Munn’s also lacked the presence of a big man in the post, and was dominated inside throughout the game. Munn’s was forced to rely too heavily on outside shooting, and connected on only 13 of 39 from 3-point range. “Our shots weren’t falling,” Johnson said.
“We’ll take this one on the chin and move on,” Willoughby said. Willoughby said he is sure his team will bounce back and get on the winning track again. “We have an abundance of talent,” he said.
In the nightcap, HyVee/Drugtown/Save U More upended Coca-Cola/Powerade 101-95.
The game was won on the glass for HyVee as the team controlled 50 rebounds while Coca-Cola managed only 18.
Donnell Bivens scored 27 points to lead the victors and also hauled in 10 rebounds.
Kelvin Cato had his way in the paint, picking up 25 points and 15 boards.
Kenny Pratt was the game’s leading scorer with 36 points, but was hit with a technical foul and ejected with under two minutes to go and the game on the line.
The first game of the night was scheduled to pit George White Chevrolet against Happy Joe’s. George White was forced to forfeit, however, due to a lack of players.
