July 15, 1996
Back-to-back big games by Jacy Holloway have Sigler Printing & Publishing on a roll and thinking championship heading into the Center Court League tournament.
Sigler defeated Happy Joe’s 110-100 in Sunday night’s last regular season game, behind Holloway’s 26 points, eight assists and five rebounds.
Last Thursday, the trio of Holloway, Kevin Sams and Fred Brown combined for 66 points, as Sigler posted a 106-91 victory over George White Chevrolet.
“I think we have a pretty good chance (of winning the tournament,)” Holloway said. “We have enough firepower.”
After an injury to his thumb hampered his shooting over the past few weeks, Holloway has come on strong recently. “My shot felt good,” Holloway said.
Holloway said one key to victory for his team is that “more guys come to our games,” enabling Sigler to wear down opponents and take control in the second half.
Shawn Bankhead used his low-post moves in netting 44 points in Happy Joe’s loss to Sigler. Despite the loss, Bankhead remained optimistic about his team’s chances in the playoffs.
“We’re going to be real good. We’ll put it together,” he said.
Happy Joe’s dominated HyVee/Drugtown/Save U More on Thursday night, 124-97. Bankhead drilled eight 3-pointers en route to 39 points.
Scott Barnes dominated the paint, tabbing 44 points. Lefty Moore did the job in the back court by adding 18 points and dishing out 16 assists.
After playing well on the perimeter on Thursday and relying on his inside play on Sunday, Bankhead said, “I’m just working on my game.”
Coca-Cola/Powerade also picked up two victories over the weekend after downing George White 94-92.
Last Thursday, Coca-Cola edged Munn’s Building Center 91-90 on a 3-pointer by Brandon Rockow with eight seconds to play.
Sam Powell scored 27 points in each of Coca-Cola’s victories. David Otte was the leading scorer for Munn’s on Thursday night with 23; Brad Johnson followed with 17.
The loss to Coca-Cola, coupled with a forfeit to HyVee on Sunday, sent Munn’s to their third straight defeat.
Munn’s, after a perfect 7-0 start, finished 7-3, but was able to hold on to first place.
