July 24, 1996
Iowa State assistant coach Kevin Bourke, who has been with the Cyclones track and cross country teams for 11 seasons, was named the Cyclones’ head cross country coach on Wednesday by ISU athletic director Gene Smith.
Bourke takes the reins from Bill Bergan, who retired in February. Bourke worked as an assistant to Bergan in the last four ISU cross country seasons, including the 1994 ISU NCAA championship year. While Bourke is the head cross country coach, he will maintain his position as assistant coach on the men’s track team.
“Kevin has been a respected member of our cross country and track and field coaching staffs and has made major contributions to the success of both programs,” Smith said.
“He was my first choice and had the full support of Bill Bergan.”
Bourke is a 1983 Iowa State graduate and recived his master’s from Illinois.
