Jazz trio to blend magical harmonies

Celtic jazz is coming to the Showmotion stage tonight.

Des Moines Metro Arts has been busy this summer lining up local talent for free performances in city parks. Tonight the entertainment is the acoustic jazz trio Kindred Spirits.

The trio with the intriguing name was founded two years ago by vocalist extraordinaire Robin Jons. Jons brought in flutist Jennifer McAbee and harpist Pat Boddy.

The name Kindred Spirits is taken from the book Anne of Green Gables.

“We feel like we are kindred spirits in the way we laugh and work together. It’s a healthy working relationship that makes our music better. It also leaves the possibility open for other musicians to join,” Jons explained.

“Robin is a real talent. She has a beautiful voice that blends well with the instruments,” Metro Arts executive director Tracy Levine said.

“The three of us get some really nice harmonies going because our blend of vocal ranges is so unusual,” Jons said.

Tonight those harmonies include everything from instrumental celtic jazz to original lullabies to a Crosby, Stills and Nash cover.

This performance will be a little different with perfect-pitch vocalist Tina Haase filling in for flutist McAbee.

“This trio will make for a beautiful night of music in the park,” Levine said.

Kindred Spirits will be at the Showmotion stage tonight.

The performance will begin at 7 p.m. at Sheridan Park, located at East 40th and Hull in Des Moines. Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

The Glastonbury Revelers, a madrigal choral group, will perform after Kindred Spirits.

The performance is free and open to the public.
