Sigler, Happy Joe’s advance in Center Court
July 17, 1996
Shawn Bankhead did everything on Tuesday night; he even brought out “The Strut,” in Happy Joe’s first-round playoff victory over HyVee/Drugtown/Save-U-More.
After trailing 17-9 early in the game, Bankhead came off the bench to provide scoring, defense, leadership and an emotional lift to his team. While Bankhead squawked, “Yeah, baby. That’s what I’m talkin’ about,” Happy Joe’s rallied, quickly taking the lead. Happy Joe’s never looked back and controlled the game the rest of the way, winning 105-90.
Bankhead, a crowd favorite for his hard play and fun-loving attitude, played to the fans all night. “I gotta play around. It’s all fun,” Bankhead said. “That’s Bankhead. I’m a comedian.”
“The Strut,” an awkward-looking, herky-jerky trot down court after a nice play, had the Center Court crowd rolling. “When we all get going (it comes out.) I like to get the crowd going,” Bankhead said.
Bankhead netted 28 points, but was not the only star for HyVee. Lefty Moore nailed eight 3-pointers and contributed 33 points, while Troy Zierke added 28.
Kelvin Cato, the regular season scoring champion, led HyVee with 40 points. Donnell Bivens chipped in 27 points, recorded 11 assists, and pulled down nine rebounds. With the victory, Happy Joe’s moves on to meet the #1 seed, Munn’s Building Center, on Thursday night at 7:30.
Bankhead said he expects a tough game with Munn’s, but remains confident about his team’s chances. “It’s playoff time. We’ll do all right. We know what it’s about,” he said.
The other semi-final match-up will pit Sigler Printing & Publishing against the #2 seed, Coca-Cola/Powerade. Sigler advanced Tuesday night with a forfeit win over George White Chevrolet.
