Iowa State’s College of Design has named a new chair of Community and Regional Planning (CRP).

On July 1, Dr. Riad Mahayni was named chair after serving as the interim chair since former chair Eric Kelly left last year.

Mahayni, who has been at ISU since 1979 when he became a professor in CRP and founded the chair of the department, has served as founding chair of the Ames Historic Preservation Commission and is now on the Ames Planning and Zoning Commission.

Before coming to Ames, Mahayni was a professor at the University of Maryland, where he chaired the Urban Affairs Program. He received his doctorate from the University of Washington in Seattle and was involved in major regional planning in Saudi Arabia for two years.
