The Catt position

To The Editor:

I do not understand how the Daily editors reached the conclusion that the university administration has been a “silent player” in the Carrie Chapman Catt Hall issue (Daily editorial “Kiss and Make Up” July 9).

President Jischke has consistently stated that the university administration does not plan to recommend a change in the name of Carrie Chapman Catt Hall to the Board of Regents.

The administration’s position has consistently been that while we acknowledge that some of the statements made by Catt and other leaders of the women’s suffrage movement were regrettable, Catt’s contributions to the advancement of equal rights warrant having a building named for her at her alma mater.

This position has been stated numerous times over the past year by president Jischke and other in the administration, in radio, television and newspaper interviews.

The Daily editors need only check the pages of the own publication, as recently as June 11, for acknowledgement of this position.
