Floyd gives Bankhead and Willoughby a one-game suspension for skipping summer classes

Iowa State leading scorer Dedric Willoughby and starting forward Shawn Bankhead have been suspended for one game for skipping classes.
Willoughby skipped a class to play in the Center Court League in Ames.
Willoughby and Bankhead join Kelvin Cato, who earlier in the season was suspended for three games after he skipped classes and failed to show up to team workouts.
“Dedric chose to play in the Center Court League instead of a regular season game. I like the Center Court League. I think it’s a great league. But acedemics are first and foremost. Anytime a player chooses to skip class it will cost them a game,” Floyd said. “Cato’s suspension dates back to March, and since then he’s done well. We’re pleased with him.”
The suspensions were made by Floyd, not the university, and are open-ended.
“I made the suspension open-ended. We’ll see what the players do,” Floyd added.
When asked if the suspension would affect pre-season or regular season games, Floyd answered, “We haven’t even discussed that.”
Floyd believes that the troubles are coming from the fact that this is the first off season for many of his players here at ISU.
“This is the first time they’ve had to deal with this, and this was expected. A year ago we lost our entire team. So we’re setting precedent for the off season. I think academics are an issue that we need to address,” Floyd said.
