Pianist to perform for fourth Keyboard Explorations Camp

After years of studying in New York, Angela Kim, an Ames native, has returned to perform as a guest artist.

“All my pieces are summery. I’m playing a water piece and a country-like piece,”Kim said. She will perform Sonata No. 15 Op. 28 in D Major “Pastorale” by Beethoven, Jeux d’eau by Ravel, Novelette (C major and B-flat minor) by Poulenc, and Sonate No. 2 op. 14 in D minor by Prokofiev.

Kim started taking lessons from her mother, Hannah, at the young age of 4. Working with her mother has allowed Kim to increase and expand her talent under the direction of other teachers.

She later took lessons from Chiu-Ling Lin from Drake University, then she traveled to Rochester, NY to take lessons at the Eastman School of Music. Kim recently graduated from the Eastman School of Music in May 1995.

Kim is currently studying under the direction of Marc Durand in Montreal, where she is furthering her repertory and preparing for international competitions, according to a recent press release. Kim plans to enter these competitions, which will take place in Italy and Germany, in spring 1996.

“I plan to move to Europe, maybe France, after I finish in Montreal,” Kim said. “I want to perform and make a living doing that.”

Kim is performing in conjunction with the Keyboard Explorations Camp. Sue Haug, Head of the Music Department, informs us that the camp is in its fourth year. This year the camp consists of 28 students.

Keyboard Explorations Camp is open to anyone from 7th to 10th grades. The camp is organized and run by the Iowa State Music Department.

Kim will perform on Friday, June 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Hall Recital Hall. Her recital is free and open to the public.
