A new director has been named for the Iowa Energy Center at Iowa State University.

Following a nationwide search, Floyd Barwig, manager of building energy programs at Pacific Northwest Laboratory in Richland, Wash., was selected from more than 70 candidates for the position of IEC director, said Adriene Koett-Cronn, communications specialist for the IEC.

Barwig is a registered architect in New York and has coordinated programs that focused on energy use in buildings.

His appointment begins on July 17, 1996. He succeeds John Cummings, who retired from the post on June 30, 1995.

Koett-Cronn said the two main areas of focus of the IEC are energy efficiency and renewable fuels, particularly biomass and wind energy. The mission of the IEC is to help Iowa businesses and communities reduce their reliance on non-renewable fuels.

The center conducts and sponsors research in these areas and it also supports energy education and demonstration programs throughout Iowa.
