Movies in summer highlights

Inez Smith

Once again this summer there will be a film series at the Memorial Union. Thirteen films, two of which will be children’s films, will be shown every Tuesday and Thursday at the Memorial Union.

Babe will be shown in the South Ballroom of the Memorial Union, and Toy Story will be shown in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union. All other films will be shown in the Maintenance Shop.

Last year they were almost filled to capacity at nearly every film.

Rusty Poehner, M-Shop coordinator, has said the reason the children’s films will be shown in the Great Hall and South Ballroom is they are “anticipating a larger crowd and can accommodate them better.”

Scott Humanski, who has been working for the Student Union Board film committee, says that they were looking for films that missed Ames or did not play very long, having an Academy nomination in at least one category. He also said that the committee will be using new projectors that will help create sharper images and will be twice as bright. They will also be experimenting with a larger screen to allow more people to be able to see the films in the M-Shop.

The M-Shop seats about 194, theater style, with chairs only and no tables. There will be free popcorn at every film. This is a new project for the SUB, according to Humanski.

These films “have been done for a number of years” according to Pat Miller of the Iowa State University Lectures Program. The films are co-sponsored by the Student Union Board and the Government of the Student Body.

Frankie Starlight will be shown tonight at the Maintenance Shop in the Memorial Union at 7:30 p.m. with the doors open at 6:45. Admission is free and the public is welcome to all films. For more information call the Memorial Union Program Department at 294-8081.
