Waltons leaving ISU

Iowa State guards Shelby and Carlo Walton have elected to transfer from Iowa State. Cyclone head basketball coach Tim Floyd announced on Tuesday that the twin brothers that hail from Newark, N.J. will make the switch to a Division II school in order to receive more playing time.

Shelby Walton played the lesser of the two brothers, averaging 0.4 points per game while playing in only 19 games. Carlo Walton was averaging five points per game and 15.8 minutes before being declared academically ineligible. At the end of the academic school year, Walton had not yet regained his eligabilty.

“Carlo was ineligible and took a look at his options. Shelby just got caught in a bind.

When we brought them in we had no idea who to redshirt because we didn’t know who was going to play. Shelby just wound up playing behind one of the best two guards in the country,” Floyd said.

While both of the Waltons were significant contributors to last year’s ISU squad, both were very close and well-liked by the team.

“They (ISU players) knew Carlo’s situation. They knew that he had to take a look at his options.”

The Waltons transferred to ISU from Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kan. where they led Seward County to the national junior college tournament.

“They’ve played together for so long. At first Carlo was leaving and Shelby was going to stay and ride it out. Then a couple of days ago they both walked in and said they were leaving,” Floyd said. “My relationship with them was very good. I wish them the best.”

The absence of the Waltons now leaves two scholarships available for the 96-97 ISU squad.

“This late in the recruiting season, it puts you in a bind,” Floyd said. “We’re always looking, but we’re not going to get a guy just to get a guy. We’re looking for quality over quantity.”
