Here we go again…
June 24, 1996
Almost one year ago to the day, delegates to the annual Southern Baptist Convention held in Atlanta overwhelmingly passed a resolution apologizing to African-Americans for condoning racism for much of its history, including the institution of slavery, and for its failure to support civil rights initiatives of the 1950s and 1960s.
In fact, the Southern Baptists, the nation’s largest Protestant denomination, was born over the split between the North and South over slavery.
At this year’s Convention in New Orleans, delegates overwhelmingly voted to boycott Walt Disney theme parks, movies, and products for extending benefits to partners of gay and lesbian employees, and for producing films with gay and lesbian characters.
Will the Southern Baptists never learn?
Though their long-established collusion with racism is significantly different from their homophobic actions, they once again are reacting from a place of intolerance and bigotry.
Will we have to wait another 150 years for them to issue another apology, this time to our gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender citizens?
