School board members honored
May 2, 1996
The Iowa Association of School Boards will honor two members from Ames, Carolyn Jons and Bill Summers, for giving more than 10 years of dedication to excellence in education.
School Board Recognition Week, May 12 to 18, will honor nearly 260 Iowans for their many years of service as school board members.
“It is a neat innovation to be recognized for making decisions that impact the education of children,” Summers said. He has been on the school board for 11 years.
More than 2,300 volunteer school board members are elected by their local communities. With an annual expenditure of more than $2.1 billion, the members are a guide to the education of 497,000 students.
“I enjoyed the educational issues not only on the local level but on the state and national level,” Summer said. He mentioned issues such as improvements in technology and education that help students to learn better.
Jons, who has served for 12 years, and Summer receive no pay for their efforts in public service.
