If you are feeling a rush of creativity, put your efforts to work. Take advantage of opportunity and display your artistic abilities in the 26th Annual ART in the PARK.

The Octagon Center for the Arts is now taking applications from artists who wish to showcase their works in ART in the PARK Festival to be held Saturday, August 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum. This year, the program is officially endorsed by the Iowa Sesquicentennial Commission.

ART in the PARK was originally held at the Bandshell Park in Ames, but with the flourishing of creative minds, it grew too large to remain at that location. The event then moved to the courtyard at Hilton Coliseum and three years ago moved indoors due to the unpredictability of the August weather to make the experience more pleasant for the artists and the public.

“It allows us to hold the event rain or shine and provides a more controlled environment,” said Carla Murphy, special events coordinator for the Octagon Center for the Arts.

This annual exhibit is a juried art festival open to approximately 150 artists. The works entered should be of fine quality and unique in idea and design. Projects made from kits, molds, patterns, plan, or stencils will not be accepted for the event.

Murphy also said that some artists’ works are available for purchase; some artists will take special orders.

Additional activities throughout the day will include live entertainment by Ames and surrounding area groups. Mel Crippan of KASI-AM radio will be the master of ceremonies. Also, tickets for artwork and tickets donated by artists and organizations will be raffled off frequently throughout the day.

Food will be provided for lunch and seating areas will be set up for people to eat or simply enjoy the summer setting.

Admission to the event will be $3 and children under 10 will be admitted free. Lucky listeners will be able to win tickets in pairs from KASI.

Applications for ART in the PARK must be post-marked by Friday, May 24, 1996. Call the Octagon Center for the Arts, which is located at 427 Douglas Ave., to find out additional information or to obtain an official entry form at 232-5331.
