Panthers too much for Cyclones in two-game sweep
May 2, 1996
The Iowa State softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to the University of Northern Iowa Panthers Wednesday by scores of 9-1 and 7-6.
Cyclone pitcher Debbie Nease took the loss in game one, dropping her to 4-9 on the year. The Panthers scored early and often, tallying five runs in the first three innings.
However, of the seven runs given up by Nease through her 4 1/3 innings of work, only four were earned as the Cyclones committed a season high six errors over the course of the contest.
The Cyclones didn’t get on the board until their half of the sixth inning after the Panthers had built up a 7-0 lead. Kally Hogan drove in Nease for the lone Iowa State run of the game.
Jane Wagner led the offense for the Cyclones, going 2 for 3 with a single and a double.
Angie Balakshin hit her fourth triple of the season. Brenna Miller doubled while Erin Woods, Hogan and Missy Danilson all collected singles for Iowa State.
A single run in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Panthers to edge the Cyclones 7-6 to register the sweep.
Woods accounted for more than half of the Cyclone runs in game two, hitting a two-run shot and driving in an additional run. The home run was Woods’ sixth of the season.
Hogan went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Wagner continued to swing a hot bat for the Cyclones, going 2 for 2 including a double and a single. Wagner also walked twice, scored a run and recorded a stolen base.
Wendy Walls collected two hits for Iowa State. Balakshin, Miller, Angie McRell and Jaime Kahler all singled.
Cyclone pitcher Jeannie Lobel gave up five runs through 3 2/3 innings and was saddled with the loss to drop her record to 2-6.
The non-conference losses dropped Iowa State’s overall record to 16-25. The Cyclones wrap up regular season play this weekend hosting Nebraska in a Big 12 Conference doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
