Free speech can hurt
May 2, 1996
In a Tuesday, April 23, article in the Daily titled “Fliers have officials questioning free speech boundaries,” I was disturbed at Mr. Cornelious’ idea of what free speech is.
It seems that to him and many other people a person is free to say and write what they feel as long as it doesn’t offend or “hurt” other people.
This is not what free speech is.
A person is free to say and write what they please as long as they don’t violate the rights of another person.
Such a violation occurs when a person is harmed by another person and not when a person is “hurt” by a ridiculous flier that is posted on campus.
