An Ames man was charged Wednesday in a hit-and-run accident after his car hit a train.

John Meeker, 18, 1015 Clark Ave., was cited for invading a railroad crossing sign and leaving the scene of an accident, said Ames Police Sgt. Jim Robinson.

Meeker allegedly drove his maroon 1986 Chrysler Lebaron car around the crossing sign on Duff Avenue.

His car was hit by a 105 car-long train at 5:30 a.m. on April 27.

According to an Ames Police Department report, Meeker’s car spun around and he drove away. Robinson said it took the train about 886 feet to stop.

During the investigation, Ames Police officers noticed a damaged vehicle on Clark Avenue that matched the description of the hit-and-run vehicle in question and matched it to car parts that were left at the scene, Robinson said.

Meeker has a court date set for May 10, Robinson said.
