Lack of coverage

To The Editor:

After looking through last week’s issues of the Daily, I have noticed an extraordinary lack of coverage of events concerning the Army,

Navy and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC).

Yet I have noticed an exceptional amount of coverage regarding superfluous activities such as the “Kiss the Car” contest and the so-called “preacher.”

While these stories are newsworthy, there is no need to cover them on consecutive days while neglecting other noteworthy events occurring on campus.

On Wednesday afternoon (April 24, 1996), the ROTC programs held their annual tri-service “Pass and Review” ceremony on central campus just north of the Campanile.

The “Pass and Review” ceremony is a military tradition designed to allow the commander the opportunity to look over his troops before heading into battle.

Here at Iowa State University, as well as many other institutions with ROTC programs, this ceremony is also an opportunity to recognize outstanding leadership displayed in the classroom by cadets and midshipmen.

If a similar event was held by one of the colleges, a department within one the colleges, or a greek organization, I’m sure coverage would have been more than adequate.

In the future, it would be more advisable to provide a better balance of all university activities, not just feuds between greeks and dormies, and the like.
