A hearty congratulations and a slap on the back need to be given to the Iowa State men’s and women’s track squads.
Members from both teams turned in some outstanding performances over the past weekend at the prestigious Drake Relays.
Highlighting the weekend for ISU was Cyclone Dmitry Drozdov’s victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase — his fourth victory at Drake in four years. That’s not only a great performance, it’s downright spectacular.
The men’s 4×100 relay team also earned a victory at Drake, which was its first in that relay since 1945.
The team’s time of 39.41 seconds was the fourth fastest time in the world this year. The men’s shuttle hurdle relay team also posted a first-place finish.
Posting second-place honors for the men’s team was Yago Lamela-Tobio in the triple jump.
For the women, long jumper Trina Radske and shot putter Heather Nelson finished with strong second-place standings.
While so much attention these days in college athletics seems to focus on football and basketball, it’s good to see ISU get some well-deserved national exposure in other sports. The men and women on the track teams have worked hard and it has paid off for them.
They should be proud of themselves, and so to should Cyclone sports fans everywhere.
