Weather slows theater expansion

Construction on the expansion of the Varsity Theatre has been difficult and behind schedule, but should be completed by Memorial Day weekend, officials said.
“It is an old piece of land nestled between two buildings. There have been a lot of unexpected surprises with the construction,” said Lynn Lloyd, property manager.
Central States Theatre Company is expanding and remodeling the Varsity Theatre, 2412 Lincoln Way, to house two movie screens. The theaters will be smaller, with 175 seats each and a large lobby will be added. A grand opening is set for May 27 if construction can be finished in time. Jim McGalliard, construction contractor with Ranack Constructors, said weather has been the biggest problem with keeping on schedule.
“Weather has been the main hold-up, but this is also a very difficult job site. The building sits in a hole and there is very little access. There is no place for a crane, especially with the traffic on Lincoln Way,” McGalliard said.
“Prior to now, the building was just an old garage used for parking. It was deteriorating,” Lloyd said.
Ranack Constructors, hired by Central States Theatre Company, is based out of Loveland, Colo. and has been working with other local contractors.
“We have had very good luck with the local contractors. They are very workable people,” McGalliard said.
The Mall Theaters I & II are also being expanded by Central States and Ranack Constructors.
Three new movie screens will be added, but will be located at the south end of the mall where the Iowa Department of Transportation was formerly located. Construction is expected to be finished between June 3 and 7 for a grand opening. “It is set to open the first week of June, but things can always come up and change with materials and other things,” McGalliard said.
