Slippery serpents invade the Botanical Center

Amanda Fier

This weekend you will find many snakes in the garden. Not only will serpents be slithering, but amphibians and other reptilian creatures will be slinking around the Des Moines Botanical Center. Tomorrow you can sneak a peak at the snakes from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the Willow Room.

The exhibit is titled “Snakes in the Garden” and is hosted by the Iowa Herpetological Society. Various specimens of snake will be on display, including corn snakes, king snakes, boa constrictors, pythons and some albino types.

Frogs, toads, turtles and salamanders will join the slitherers at the Center. For those who desire a lizard-like companion, some of these members of the animal kingdom will be available for purchase at affordable prices.

Members of the Herpetological Society will be available to answer questions and hand out literature about the snakes. They will be able to point out which snakes should really scare you.

But not only will they tell you what to worry about, they will clear up any misunderstandings people have about snakes.

The cost for the event is 50 cents for college students with ID.

The Des Moines Botanical Center is located at 909 E. River Dr., in Des Moines.
