Veishea tourneys a success thus far

By the time this is read, the people who have been bringing you Veishea will have crowned champions in several different intramural tournaments.

One of the more popular tournaments this year was the five-on-five basketball tournament that had approximately 20 men’s and co-rec teams at a cost of $20 per team.

The teams signed up for the single elimination tournament based on whether they were a men’s or co-rec team.

The teams were then matched and played against one another Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the Lied Recreation and Athletic Facility.

Another popular tournament involved the men’s and co-rec divisions of flag football.

Deb Handorf, a senior in public service administration and Veishea executive board member, said that this was also a single elimination tournament that attracted between 15 and 20 teams to the Towers Athletic Fields on Tuesday throughout Thursday evenings.

On another part of the Towers Athletic Fields, the men’s and co-rec teams participated in a soccer tournament. The $20 participation cost did not deter the teams from signing up for this tournament.

One of the less conventional tournaments held out by the Towers this week was the two-on-two sand volleyball tournament.

Because the number of people participating on each team was smaller than many of the other tournament sports, participation costs were $10 per team, Handorf said.

The sand volleyball tournament is different from a conventional game of volleyball in that it does not allow players to trade in and out of the game.

Overall, Handorf said that the tournaments have been running well and have been well attended.

She said that the organization tends to play the outdoor games where they were originally scheduled barring unusually bad weather. This year the weather has been good so none of the tournaments has been delayed.

“Everything has been running very smoothly. Turnout has been very good, the weather has cooperated and the tournaments have been a great success,” Handorf said.
