WHO-TV expands into cyberspace

Now you can find the latest news, weather and sports on your computer, providing you have on-line service. “WHO-ON-CALL” is WHO-TV’s World Wide Web newscenter, and it is up and running 24 hours a day.

According to Bob Quinn, WHO-TV’s news director, “The news is updated four times a day, the weather is updated three times a day, and the sports comes in twice a day. It looks a lot like you see on TV. We freeze frames of video for the news.

“On the information side, we’ll have the daily news in there with actual pictures of news events that have happened. There’d be some interesting weather also,”Quinn added. “We produce our own weather maps here, and you can look at the day’s forecast and the next seven days’ forecast.

“Right now, most of the TV site is up and running. The television area is up. There are some things like program schedules and AM, the quick news and market report will be added in. We really got the television side up and running. It’s the highly graphical-driven one. That was the hardest one to do — the hardest site to build,” Quinn explained.

So far, it has taken a year-and-a-half to build the on-line service, but news and weather are not all that will be available on the Web once all of the on-line facilities are completed.

“On the FM side, once K-LYF gets up and running with everything that is built into it for them, they’ll have some pictures of musical artists,” Quinn said. “They’ll have some clips of new music that can be downloaded. So there is some interest in that area also.”

Pictures will also be available of WHO-AM’s Van and Bonnie and Jan Mickelson, along with farm reporter Gary Wergin. Program notes will be available. K-LYF will also be providing program notes, along with updates on special promotions, reports from recording artists and a chance to e-mail the same artists.

“Eventually when we get everything put into it, we’ll be able to hyper-link to the NBC Web site,” Quinn said. “When students link to NBC they’ll find program information, pictures of NBC stars and up-dates on NBC soaps.

“This month the NBC Web-site is featuring ‘Friends,’ and they’ve got some bios on the ‘Friends’ stars and some pictures open[ing] the program. You can use it as a screen saver if you want to. There’s fun stuff like that on the entertainment side,” Quinn said.

But there’s more.

“We’re going to build an on-call mall, which is going to be like a shopping mall on your computer system. We’ll have stores in there. You can pop it up and it will take you either to the store’s Web site, or we’ll build them a page there for doing just like they would have a catalogue,” Quinn explained.

“WHO-ON-CALL” will not cost extra to on-line subscribers.
