Greek Week success

To The Editor:

Congratulations to each and every person who participated in a very successful Greek Week 1996!

The overwhelming community service, fund-raising, pop tab/soup label collections, and record setting blood drive have contributed to the Ames community and the state of Iowa.

Not only was Greek Week a tremendous philanthropic success, but I feel it was a dignified success, as well.

We are all aware that Greek systems nationwide are being scrutinized in a negative light for issues ranging from hazing to alcohol.

It is unfortunate that the abundance of good deeds Greeks do is overshadowed by infrequent, yet hapless, incidents.

But, rather than dwelling on an unjust negative image and letting it become a self-fulfilling prophecy, we gathered during Greek Week to showcase all of the pride we have as Greeks in our national award-winning Iowa State Greek system.

Greeks have been unfairly criticized for ages. To be honest, I am not sure this criticism will ever stop.

We are a big target because our numbers are so high and our members are extremely visible in almost every realm of society.

People tend to shoot at the biggest targets because they are the easiest to hit. Despite the adversity, it is our obligation as Greeks to keep the system going strong.

I am proud to say our generation of Greeks is doing its job to keep the Greek system alive and well, especially at Iowa State.

We are continuing the traditions of service, scholarship and leadership which have bred many of the most profound individuals and benefited some of the most worthy causes in our society for over a century.

We are a great group, and we have every right to be proud of ourselves.
