New IDs are a must, officials say

Many students aren’t aware that the new student IDs are a must, officials said.

Joan Thompson, Iowa State treasurer, said the first few days of processing the new ID cards were slow.

“Things are starting to pick up and if we can keep up this pace, we should be able to finish by the time we need to,” Thompson said. “We need to average 1,200 students a day in order to be on schedule.”

So far, turnout has not been that high. “Even if the student doesn’t want the bank account, he still needs to get a new ID,” Thompson said.

Right now, students can get their new IDs, called ISUCards, no matter when they are scheduled to get them.

“If there isn’t a line, we’re urging students to go ahead and get their new IDs,” Thompson said. Students need to get a new ID if they are graduating in the summer or any time after.

“The new IDs are a must, but the bank stripe, bank account, and other features are only optional,” said Steve Sullivan, an ISU spokesperson.

“About 15 percent of the students coming in for new IDs have applied for the bank services,” Thompson said.

The deadline for receiving the new ID is June 7. “If a student does not get his ID by then, the student must pay $15 to receive one,” said Thompson. “After June 7, the old IDs won’t be usable.”
