Ice show extravaganza takes place this weekend
April 9, 1996
The third annual ice show extravaganza is taking place this weekend at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.
It’s sponsored by the Ames Figure Skating Club, said Nicole Peterson, publicity chairperson.
The members of the Ames Figure Skating Club have devoted a large amount of time and effort to every aspect of the show, including designing costumes and scenery.
“The costumes are extremely colorful,” Peterson said.
The ice show will include about 75 different skaters of all ages. These skaters are from Ames and nearby cities including Boone, Nevada, Marshalltown and Story City.
The show’s theme is “Broadway Blades.” The performance is to include songs from many different musicals including 42nd Street, Oliver, Oklahoma, Annie Get Your Gun, West Side Story, Sound of Music, and Les Miserables.
“Broadway Blades” was choreographed by two students from Iowa State, Mandy Dearborn, a senior in genetics, and Beth Huebsch, a senior in elementary education. Both women coach in Ames and have been involved in the show for three years.
“They’ve been wonderful role models,” Peterson said.
The ISU hockey team will be highlighted in the show. Nine members will be skating with Dearborn and Huebsch to a number from Oklahoma.
Eric Bohnstedt, Amy Wisely and Jason Heffron will also be featured.
Eric Bohnstedt trains at the Ice Castle Training Center at Lake Arrowhead, Calif., and is a nationally ranked Senior Men’s Competitor. Bohnstedt is an Olympic hopeful, Peterson said.
Wisely and Heffron are teenage pair skaters from Rockford, Ill. They are Novice Level Pair Skaters who are part of the Illinois Figure Skating Club. Wisely and Heffron are nationally ranked at the novice level.
The tickets for the show is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for children and free for children under five. Tickets are available at the door, or can be obtained in advance from the Ames Figure Skating Club or from show participants.
