Due to immense popularity, the Des Moines Playhouse has added a performance of Singin’ in the Rain, which it has dedicated to the late Gene Kelly.

Veishea weekend welcomed the show, and it virtually sold out. It also received rave reviews.

The musical is a stage adaptation of the MGMfilm, which starred Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor. The boy-meets-girl story spoofs Hollywood’s transition from silent movies to talkies.

It includes familiar songs like “Make ‘Em Laugh,” “You Are my Lucky Star,” “Good mornin'” and “Singin’ in the Rain.” It even rains on stage for the title song.

Tickets cost $16 to $19, with half-price tickets for students. They can be reserved at the Playhouse box office, located at 831 42nd St., in Des Moines.

The additional show is scheduled for Sunday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m. Already scheduled performances run Wednesday through Saturday, from now until May 11, at 8 p.m. Sunday matinee are at 2 p.m.through May 12.

Coinciding with the production is an exhibit by two local artists. Gene and Carlie Hamilton, both of Des Moines, are displaying 20 of their prints and paintings at the playhouse through May 12.

Carlie’s work is of the American flower garden. Her art is representational and done in an acrylic wash method, which is often mistaken for watercolor.

Gene’s prints depict life on Green Lake in Wisconsin. The Hamiltons’ work is in several museum and corporate collections, as well as in state and federal government collections.

The exhibit is open during the Playhouse’s business hours, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, with additional evening and weekend hours throughout the run of Singin’ in the Rain.
