The Iowa State women’s tennis team continued its Big Eight portion of the season with two tough losses to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Cyclones lost to the 30th ranked Oklahoma Sooners 6-1.

Iowa State’s sole win came from Erika Asmuss, who won her No. 1 singles match against a nationally-ranked opponent.

“The big highlight of the weekend was Erika’s win at No. 1 singles in three sets,” Head Coach Michele Conlon said.

Asmuss dropped the first set 2-6 before rallying to win 6-2, 7-6, 6-4.

Conlon was very pleased with Asmuss’ victory.

“If you lose a set 6-2 to a player that’s ranked and is a very strong player, it is very difficult to come back and win,” Conlon said.

On Sunday, ISU took on Oklahoma State, who beat Oklahoma earlier in the season. The Cyclones lost to the very talented Oklahoma State team 7-0.

“Our doubles were particularly good against Oklahoma State,” Conlon said. “That continues to be a strong area for us.”

Although the Cyclones may have been over-matched, Conlon said she believes the team is improving with every match it plays.

“I feel we are improved as individuals,” Conlon said of her team. “Several of the players are playing some of the best tennis they have played.”

Iowa State will now take two days off and have a light practice on Wednesday before heading off to play Colorado on Friday and Nebraska on Saturday.
