The Iowa State woman’s tennis team kicked off its Big Eight Conference portion of its season by winning one out of three matches over the weekend.

The Cyclones started off the weekend with a convincing win over Missouri 7-0 on Friday.

All six ISU singles players, Maggi Agustoson, Erika Asmuss, Ann Backhaus, Kirsten Fagen, Angie Miller and Mary Rambaoa won their matches in straight sets, losing only a combined 11 games.

The Cyclones doubles teams also won their three matches in dominating style, losing only a combined five games.

On Saturday the Cyclones lost to 18th ranked Kansas University 6-1. Although the Cyclones lost the match, Head Coach Michele Conlon was very pleased with the way the team played against the Jayhawks.

“It was the first time we won a singles match against Kansas since I’ve been here,” Conlon said.

The Cyclones continue to show improvement from last season. Against Kansas last year ISU only won 16 games compared to 40 on Saturday.

Iowa State’s singles victory against Kansas came from Miller who Conlon said is playing extremely well right now.

Iowa State finished up the long weekend on Sunday against Kansas State, losing the match 7-0.

“Kansas State is a very strong team,” Conlon said.

Kansas State’s top two players are both ranked nationally.

Before the match with Kansas State, the Cyclones lost Fagen due to a shoulder injury and were forced to put together a doubles team at the last minute.

The team of Rumbaoa and Agustoson, who had not played doubles together before, played very well according to their coach.

“We’ve really come a long way the last couple of weeks,” Conlon said. “We’re starting to gel as a team.”

Iowa State next takes on Drake on Wednesday here in Ames, and then travels to Oklahoma to take on Oklahoma University and Oklahoma State next weekend.
