The Iowa State men’s volleyball club participated in the National Intramural Recreation Sport Association Collegiate Club Championships this past week at the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio.

The Cyclones entered the tournament ranked No. 15 in the country. The tournament, which was played in a pool style, ran five days.

In ISU’s pool were Rutgers, Miami of Ohio and Colorado. Iowa State beat Rutgers and Miami while losing to 10th-ranked Colorado. After the first pool, the Cyclones defeated Kentucky to move onto another pool where they took on No. 2 California and 8th-ranked Northern Colorado. Iowa State lost to California in a close match 15-10, 15-8. The Cyclones were also defeated by Northern Colorado 15-5, 15-8.

The two losses put the Cyclones out of the tournament with a tie for 17th place out of 96 teams from around the country. For the fifth time in the last six years, the Cyclones finished higher than any other team without a head coach. Iowa State is consistently one of the best un-coached teams in the country.

The closest thing ISU has to a head coach is Justin Ingram, who acts as player/coach for the Cyclones.

Iowa State will return four starters to next year’s team. This year’s team members include Mikko Blomberg, Eric Briesemeister, John Campbell, Ingram, Kirt Jones, Joe Lundh and Mike Wikstrom.
