Sorority hopes to aid low income families
April 7, 1996
An Iowa State sorority hopes to aid an organization helping expectant mothers in low income families and pregnant teenage girls.
Zeta Phi Beta sorority will host an event at 6 p.m. today at the Margaret Sloss Women’s Center as part of a national philanthropy to help Stork’s Nest.
Stork’s Nest offers classes and seminars to expectant mothers on such topics as drug and alcohol abuse, as well as on positive topics such as leadership. The subjects of the classes and seminars tend to vary with location.
The expectant mothers who attend these seminars and classes receive points. When their child is born, they can turn in the points they have and receive gifts for the baby.
This past week, members of Zeta Phi Beta sent out personal notes to all the fraternities and sororities at ISU asking for donations of baby items for Stork’s Nest. The group is asking for nonperishable items such as diapers and clothing, said Khadijah Chester, a member of Zeta Phi Beta.
Local businesses also made donations to the organization. The donations will go to the Des Moines area Stork’s Nest.
The presentation today will include a slide show and information on the Stork’s Nest. The main speaker at the event will be Jody Elliott, the Stork’s Nest coordinator for the ISU and the Des Moines division.
