Cyclones takes home tourney from Drake

The Iowa State University men’s golf team was able to extract a little revenge on Drake to wrap up their spring slate at the Drake Relays in Des Moines on April 25 and 26.

The Cyclones were able to claim the team title in the 15 squad event by leading from the opening 18.

Iowa State posted round totals of 300-305-311 (916) and defeated their intrastate rival by 13 strokes.

“We were determined to beat them in their own tournament,” Head Coach Dale Anderson said.

Anderson said that the team has really stepped up during April.

“We are gaining momentum,” Anderson said. “We have finished first in the St. Louis tournament, third in Wichita, fourth at the Big Eight and then first at Drake,” Anderson said. “And we finished just 13 strokes behind the number one team in the country [Oklahoma St.]”

The Cyclones were able to place three golfers in the top 10 in the tournament.

“Everyone contributed,” the coach said. “They just are playing tough.”

Senior Chris Peterson led the Cyclone golfers with his 224-stroke total, good for second place individually.

“Chris played another solid tournament,” Anderson said.

Peterson finished six strokes behind Missouri-Kansas City golfer Robert Russell.

Travis Korver has continued to rebound by posting his fifth place finish with a final tally of 228 strokes over the 54-hole event.

The final top 10 finisher was sophomore Corey Chambers.

This Cyclone finished in seventh place with his final card of 230 strokes.

Jason Knutzon finished in a tie for 14th place with his 236-stroke total, while junior Donnie Teeter finished in a tie for 21st place overall with his 239-stroke total to round out the Cyclone scoring.

The Bulldogs claimed second place in the tournament with their 929-stroke total.

Drake was lead behind the duo of Ben Pettitt and Ben Poehling with their tie for third place finish at 226 strokes.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City was able to claim the third spot with their final team score of 930 strokes. Russell lead the team with his final card of 218, leaving him just two-over-par for the tournament.

The University of Northern Iowa saw a 13th place finish. The Panthers were lead by top 10 finisher Nathan Lubs.

Lubs claimed a ninth place finish with 232 strokes for the tournament.

Iowa State may still be able to gain a post-season berth. The Cyclones, if granted the berth, will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., on May 16-18 to play in the NCAA Central Regional.

Anderson feels like the Cyclones have a legitimate chance at qualifying for the regionals.

“Hopefully we can gain a post-season berth,” Anderson said. “We should get a hard look from the committee which will meet in a couple of days.”

Anderson feels as if they should gain the berth.

“If I were to predict, I would say that we are in,” Anderson said. “And that is a pretty good guess.”

Anderson said that they will announce the berths on May 6.
