Send to: Planet Earth
April 4, 1996
I believe nationalism has caused, and continues to cause, more tragedies in human history than any other “ism.”
In the name of nationalism, socio-political organizations often handle their territorial disputes in the most cruel and brutal ways.
Perhaps the following suggestion will somewhat abate the hatred and bitter hostility between nations, which is very often the result of nationalistic indoctrinations.
I recommend writing the words “Planet Earth” on the last line of any address, as shown in the following fictitious examples:
To: Alisa David
Howard Town
Kilzer Country
Planet Earth
From: Tammy Greg
Dean Town
Speicher Country
Planet Earth
I realize that incorporating the two simple words “Planet Earth” would not necessarily decrease the bitter hostility created by nationalistic fanaticism.
Indeed, a bitter hostility may even exist between two identical twins born from the same womb, living in the same family and house, having the same upbringing, belonging to the same nation and being indoctrinated with the same indoctrinations.
Nevertheless, stressing the idea of dwelling on the same planet may at least have a unifying psychological effect among many nations living on the Planet Earth.
I think passing a law to this effect would contribute to the global peace more than military interventions, which in most cases foster nationalistic fanaticism.
It should be noted that, as of yet, no need exists to include “Solar System” or “Milky Way” in the above examples.
