Cyclones finish impressively at Drake Relays

The Iowa State men’s and women’s teams had some top performances and impressive finishes at the Drake relays held on Friday and Saturday in Des Moines.

For the men, Dmitry Drozdov won his fourth steeple chase title in four years with a gold medal time of 8:47.98.

Not to be outdone, the Cyclone 4 x 100 meter team of Jerry Harris, Randy Thompson, Jason Woods and Frank Nwankpa blew the competition away with a stellar time of 39.31, over four-tenths faster than the second-place Iowa Hawkeyes’ squad.

Woods, who was the third leg in the 4 x 100 meter run, also contributed in the Cyclones’ first-place finish in the shuttle hurdle relay.

John Barnett, Chris Wycoff and Eric Strim rounded out the shuttle hurdle relay team that turned in a championship time of 57.97.

Iowa State freshman jumper Yago Lamela-Tobio also fared well at the relays by finishing second in the triple jump with a leap of 51-2 1/4.

Nwankpa also had a full meet, finishing fourth in the invitational 200 meters with a time of 21.41, while teammate Thompson finished fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 10.62.

For the Cyclone women, Trina Radske had an excellent meet with a second place jump of 20-9.

Radske finished just behind Nebraska’s Tashika Lewis, who jumped 20-10 3/4.

In the shot put, ISU’s Heather Nelson finished in second place behind Nebraska standout Paulette Mitchell, with a toss of 53-2 3/4.

In the discus, Cyclone Kris Curnyn came in fifth place with a toss of 159-1.

In other exciting action, Michael Johnson, the world’s No. 1-ranked 200-meter and 400-meter sprinter, broke the Drake Relays record in the 400 meters with a time of 44.41.

Johnson broke the record of Butch Reynolds, who held the world record in the 400 meters.

Both ISU track teams will be in action on May 5 at the Tennessee Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn.
