NAACP to endorse Sept. 29 Movement

The Ames branch of the NAACP will announce its support today for the campus movement to rename Carrie Chapman Catt Hall.

George Jackson, the head of the Ames branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the assistant dean of the Graduate College, will speak in support of The September 29 movement at noon from the east steps of Beardshear Hall.

The September 29 Movement is made up of ISU students and staff who oppose the name of Carrie Chapman Catt Hall because of racist, xenophobic statements the suffragist made in her attempt to ratify the 19th Amendment. In a prepared statement, Jackson said, “If, in 1996, we cannot speak the truth and search for truth within our universities, then when and where?

“We realize that ridding the world of racism is a long, painful and difficult journey, but it is a journey that we must take,” Jackson said. “Simply admit that we made a mistake—but ensure that history records that we corrected it.”
